A Salute to Jack: Scouting's Flame
Jack's camp slogan "Scouting's Flame Burns Bright" is the reason we chose to label the first tier of the "Salute to Jack" awards Scouting's Flame. Our goal for the 2023 camping season is to see 448 Scouts and leaders complete the challenges associated with this award. The expectations are detailed below for both youth and adults.
A leader from your troop will be able to submit your name here (link to be inserted) to be added to the list. All earning Scouting's Flame will be recognized at Friday night's campfire by members of Jack's troop.
Youth Requirements:
- Earn (or previously have earned) the Totin' Chip.
- Why? Jack loved carving and taught countless Scouts how to sharpen, handle, and care for blades. The NightHawks staff will help you earn this even if you aren't in the program!
- Earn (or previously have earned) Woodcarving merit badge.
- Why? This was one of Jack's favorite badges. He ran the Handicraft area and continued to volunteer there after his years as Camp Director. Sign up for a class or see the crafts staff during freetime to work on the badge!
- Earn swimmer designation at the pool during camp.
- Why? Jack believed all Scouts should be able to boat. We offer instructional swim during the second morning session for those that can't complete the swim check on Sunday!
- Land one tomahawk in the bullseye at the tomahawk range. Help the staff sharpen one.
- Why? One of Jack's campfire stories/ Scoutmaster minutes while he was Camp Director was about the importance of sharp tomahawks.
- Earn a score of 90% or higher on uniform inspection.
- Why? Jack was a stickler for uniforming. He required his troop and the camp staff to be in near perfect uniform and made sure patches were in their appropriate places. We'll have staff ready to do inspections on Monday while you're in line for dinner.
Adult Requirements:
- Teach (or reteach) at least two Scouts to sharpen knives or axes while in camp or while preparing for camp.
- Why? Jack loved carving and taught countless Scouts how to sharpen, handle, and care for blades.
- Complete 2 hours of service to Camp Barnhardt beyond your Scoutmaster role either during your week of camp or on Beaver Day.
- Why? Jack said "when they can't afford your help, do it for free."
- Earn a score of 90% or higher on uniform inspection.
- Why? Jack was a stickler for uniforming. He required his troop and the camp staff to be in near perfect uniform and made sure patches were in their appropriate places. We'll have staff ready to do inspections on Monday while you're in line for dinner.
