A Salute to Jack: Jörmungandr

The advanced tier of the "Jack Legacy" awards in 2025 is titled Jörmungandr. We couldn't find any link between Jack and Norse history, but he loved the outdoors and wouldn't be afraid of the giant Midgard Serpent. He'd probably even befriend Jörmungandr, the immense snake that Vikings believed encircled the entire world, grasping it's own tail in his mouth. His presence was believed to keep the oceans in place and hold the world together, but he was also a constant, looming threat (just like Jack could be if you showed up late or out of uniform!).

The expectations are detailed below for both youth and adults. Scouts can place their scoresheets in the designated box in the Dining Hall after completing the award's requirement.

All earning the Jörmungandr award patch will be recognized at Friday night's campfire. 

Youth Requirements: 

1. Contribute 2 hours of service outside of your troop responsibility.
   • Why? Jack always lent a hand when needed!
2. Teach a younger scout a skill using EDGE method.
   • Why? Jack was a great merit badge instructor. He often taught badges like Woodcarving and Woodwork. 
3. Personally or as a member of a small group, score in the top 3 in at least one of the week's competitive small games (knattleik, oar jumping, hnefatal, stone lift, swim race, engineering challenge, the great feast, the lost raiding party, skalds/singers, and slushie horn chugging). 
   • Why? We want you to entertain us and do your best. Remember that we're giving awards for the best and the funniest. If you can't sing or dance, just be funny.
4. You personally complete the challenge to earn sheild sigils in three different program areas. 
   • Why? You should contribute to the team. You don't have to be a master of all Scout activities, but you need expertise in more than one.
5. You unit has a troop shield that earns all camp sigils. 
   • Why? Your troop needs to contribute to the team. Completing the shield and earning a banner helps your teammates. 
6. Your tribe earns all 9 banners. 
   • Why? The Viking Voyage is the big event for the summer. Completiing it shows you worked with your troop and others. Some banners can be earned earlier in the week through spirit contests, the great viking feast, skalds and singers, and more.  Having a head start is key because it may be tough to earn nin before dark on Thursday. Participation is not enough! You don't have to win, but you need to finish before it's too dark for the event to continue! 

Adult Requirements: 

1. Complete 6 hours of service to Camp Barnhardt beyond your Scoutmaster role either during your week of camp or on Beaver Day (6 total, but we ask that you split up your hours between assisting program and assisting the kitchen or ranger). 
   • Why? Jack said "when they can't afford your help, do it for free." 
2. Carve a neckerchief slide (to give to a scout in your troop at the end of the week as an award). 
   • Why? That's how Jack's tradition started and we'd like to see other troops/leaders pick up this habit. Jack's Scouts value those carvings decaeds later and we're sure the Scout you present yours to will as well.  
3. Post a review of Barnhardt Summer Camp online (good or bad) or make multiple social media posts about your Viking experience about Barnhardt.  
   • Why? We want you to be honest, but we think you'll have good things to say. So make some comments on google, yelp, or really anywhere that other troops may learn about camp. Give them some details about what Camp John J. Barnhardt does well!
4. Support the Viking Voyage event we're running on Thursday. See the Program Driector for options.
   • Why? Well this is the biggest event and our staff may need some leader support. The staff will run the events, but at least a handful of leaders will be needed to keep score or assist.
5. Your tribe earns all 9 banners. 
   • Why? While it's the Senior Patrol Leaders jobs to motivate the troops, your advice and recommendations help them become better leaders and accomplish goals. Keep them on track so they feel like they're successful. It's also your job as leader to inspire youth to get into the camp theme. 

Staff/Alumni Requirements (do one of the following): 

1. Volunteer for eight program days total in 2025 between summer camp, winter camp, cub camp, and program release)
   • Why? Jack said "when they can't afford your help, do it for free." 
2. Work at least 4 full weeks as a paid staff member, completing all assignments on time and fulfilling all job expectations.
3. Complete remote support tasks worthy of recognition (e.g., assisting with camp design, paperwork, promotions, etc.)
