A Salute to Jack: Fenrir

The first tier of the "Jack Legacy" awards in 2024 is titled Fenrir, one of the most infamous and powerful monstrous beings in Norse mythology-- a terrifying wolf and symbol of immense power. The expectations are detailed below for both youth and adults. Scouts can place their scoresheets in the designated box in the Dining Hall after completing the award's requirement.

All earning the Fenrir award patch will be recognized at Friday night's campfire. 

Youth Requirements: 

1. Earn a score of 90% or higher on uniform inspection.
   • Why? Jack was a stickler for uniforming. He required his troop and the camp staff to be in near perfect uniform and made sure patches were in their appropriate places. We'll have staff ready to do inspections on Monday while you're in line for dinner (and at other times). 
2. Score in the top 10 for either the Great Feast or Skalds and Singers (so in the top 5 for "funny" or the top five for "good/talented"). 
   • Why? We want you to entertain us and do your best. Remember that we're giving awards for the best and the funniest. If you can't sing or dance, just be funny.... or feed the Program Director and Commissioner
3. Compete in two of the following: Viking engineering, hnefatal, the lost raiding party, swim races, or knattleik. 
   • Why? You can't enjoy camp or our competitions if you don't try!
4. Build a Viking-themed gateway with your troop. 
5. Earn (or have earned) at least one of the following seafaring badges: Canoeing, Rowing, or Sailing.
   • Why? Vikings!
6. You personally complete the challenge to earn at least one sigil for your troop's shield. 
7. Introduce yourself/talk to 2 of the 3 Youth Staff Leaders (there is a SPL/ and two ASPLs)
   • Why? Jack was always connecting with people at camp and we want you to do the same. Get to know the youth staff that are in charge of our fun activities, campfires, and such-- maybe even ask them about what it would be like to join the staff! 

Adult Requirements: 

1. Complete 3 hours of service to Camp Barnhardt beyond your Scoutmaster role either during your week of camp or on Beaver Day (6 total, but we ask that you split up your hours between assisting program and assisting the kitchen or ranger). 
   • Why? Jack said "when they can't afford your help, do it for free."

3. Introduce yourself to 4 of the key adult staff (Camp Dir., Program Dir, Commissioner, Chaplain, Lead Lumberjack, Ranger). 
   • Our staff needs to know you in order to make your camp stay the best it can be. 
4. Your troop wins the Thor's Hammer (spirit recognition) at an assembly. 
   • Why? Scout spirit is important. It's your job as leader to inpire youth to get into the camp theme. Show us how glad you are to be here and have the other troops choose to recognize you! 
5. Post on Facebook or Instagram (tagging us) a photo, video, or image that shows your guess for the 2026 theme. Tell us why you think that's what we've picked (or what we should pick in the future).
   • While we've already got 2026 planned, we may postpone that theme if you convince us of another great one! Keep in mind that our winter camp this year is "Barnhardt Clue," a murder mystery event. We'll reveal our theme at camp on August 23rd at the Program Release Party. Join us back at camp that day for the big reveal!

Staff/Alumni Requirements (do one of the following): 

1. Volunteer for four program days total in 2025 between summer camp, winter camp, cub camp, and program release)
   • Why? Jack said "when they can't afford your help, do it for free." 
2. Work at least 3 full weeks as a paid staff member, completing all assignments on time and fulfilling all job expectations.
3. Complete remote support tasks worthy of recognition (e.g., assisting with camp design, paperwork, promotions, etc.)
