A Salute to Jack: Uwharrie

The first tier of the Jack Legacy awards in 2024 is titled Uwharrie since Jack attended camporees at Camp Uwharrie as a Scout and later was a Scoutmaster of a troop that attended Camp Uwharrie's summer camp in 1946. The expectations are detailed below for both youth and adults. Scouts can place their scoresheets in the designated box in the Dining Hall after completing the award's requirements

All earning the Uwharrie award will be recognized at Friday night's campfire.. 

Youth Requirements: 

1. Lasso a bull or calf with Barnhardt Staff. 
   • Why? During one of Jack's summers as Camp Director, we hosted Wild West Wednesday campfires. Plus, roping is fun. Staff will offer lasso sessions on Monday evening and it's also part of the special event on Thursday. 
2. Earn (or previously have earned) a cowboy-type merit badge: Pioneering OR American Heritage OR Horsemanship OR Animal Science OR Rifle.
   • Why? Our staff can help you earn these and it's good to get into the camp theme!
3. Score 90% or better on uniform inspectIon. 
   • Why? Jack was a stickler for uniforming. He required his troop and the camp staff to be in near perfect uniform and made sure patches were in their appropriate places. We'll have staff ready to do inspections on Monday while you're in line for dinner.
4. ParIcipate in the Open Range Cooking Competition on Tuesday or Sing/ Line Dance at Wednesday's Wild West Music Review-- You don't have to win, just feed us, or entertain us (like the program guide says "if you can't be good, be funny"). 
   • Why? Jack  taught campsite cooking to his troop as recently as 2019. He was the last Camp Director to oversee camp when troops had to cook every meal in the campsite. Of course, if you don't like cooking, just sing or line dance as part of the Wednesday night competition.
5. Introduce yourself/talk to 2 of the 3 Youth Staff Leaders (there is a SPL/ and two ASPLs)
   • Why? Jack was always connecting with people at camp and we want you to do the same. Get to know the youth staff that are in charge of our fun activities, campfires, and such-- maybe even ask them about what it would be like to join the staff! 

Adult Requirements: 

1. Lasso a bull or calf with Barnhardt Staff. 
   • Why? During one of Jack's summers as Camp Director, we hosted Wild West Wednesday campfires. Plus, roping is fun. Staff will offer lasso sessions on Monday evening and it's also part of the special event on Thursday. 
2. Ride the Aqua-bull (if physically unable, you may substitute entering a dish in the adult portion of the Open Range Cooking Contest).
   • Why? It's good to get into the camp theme! Plus the campers will ejoy watching you try to hold on for 8 seconds. 
3. Score 90% or better on uniform inspectIon. 
   • Why? Jack was a stickler for uniforming. He required his troop and the camp staff to be in near perfect uniform and made sure patches were in their appropriate places. We'll have staff ready to do inspections on Monday while you're in line for dinner.
4. Complete 3 hours of service to Camp Barnhardt beyond your Scoutmaster role either during your week of camp or on Beaver Day. We ask that you contribute half of that time to assisting program and the other half to assisting the kitchen or ranger. 
   • Why? Jack said "when they can't afford your help, do it for free." 
5. Introduce yourself/talk to 4 of the 5 Staff Leaders (Camp Director J.P. Grillo, Program Directors John Stogner and Chris Alexander, Commissioner Jeff Mosher, and Chaplain/Commissioner Kevin Fuller). 
   • Why? Jack was always connecting with people at camp and we want you to do the same. Get to know the staff that are in charge of our camp-- maybe even ask them about what you could do to help out in the future.
